J.Hempstock and co ltd have recently completed the restoration of a local landmark overlooking the memorial gardens in bury town centre. It is often used for a backdrop for weddings and local events

Built in 1914 by architects maxwell & tuke as their final project. It was presented to the town by sir henry whitehead. It is made of portland stone and crowned with a copper covered cupola and 4 copper corner pinnacles.

The works being carried out for bury metropolitan borugh council and overseen by architects fairhursts dg incorporating cruickshank seward & bury architectural services. The works being carried out to ensure its stability and soundness for future generations to enjoy.

The crowing glory to the tower is just that, a copper repouse’ crown originally painted & guilded, is now suffering from corrosion and requires remedial repairs. The lead gutter to the perimeter of the dome has failed and allowed water ingress and further decay to the timber substrate.
The gutters to be replaced to the latest lead sheet associations recommendations which will ensure the roof remain’s wateright. The dome being stripped of copper and the timber repaired prior to the replacement of the entire copper dome using natural finish copper to allow it to form its natural patina showing its various colour changes over time. Also the ornate corner pinnacles being replaced with new copper including the repouse ornamentations

Internally the oak structure and the surrounding oak louvres repaired and replaced
The portland stone structure undergoing inspection and repair along with restoration of ‘hipocretes’ the cast iron statue overseeing all whom pass below him within the gardens
The works to be completed by the end of summer this year.
